How to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary

Would you like to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary?

Sanctuary [ˈsæŋ(k)ʧuːəri] noun
Your safe and peaceful haven.
A comforting place of refuge and rest in a noisy, chaotic world.

Your bedroom is where you begin your day and end your evening.

It should be a place of relaxation – somewhere you can escape to, unwind, reset and recharge.

It’s hard to believe we spend approximately one-third of our lives in bed but getting a good night’s sleep can be more challenging than you think.

Here are 12 tips for creating a restful, tranquil bedroom that will help you nod off easily when your head hits the pillow…

Colour

Opt for neutral colours in muted tones. Blues and greens are especially good for the bedroom as they promote feelings of calm and relaxation. The lighter the colour, the more soothing and relaxing it will be. Avoid bold colours and keep away from busy patterns for large areas like the walls or bedspread. Instead have small pops of colour and pattern in the cushions and throws.

Flooring

Soft carpet will give a luxurious feel to the space and offer comfort and warmth underfoot. Adding rugs on bare floors will help keep in heat.

Windows

Block out light with blackout blinds and curtain linings. For a luxe look and to make your window appear larger, hang long curtains from well above the window to the floor. Take them a good bit wider than the window opening too.

Layout

Keep Feng Shui principles in mind when deciding on layout. The bed should be against the wall diagonally across from the door. Not under a window or directly opposite the door. It subconsciously makes us feel safer and more in control if we have a view of the entrance from the bed, thus encouraging restful sleep.

Declutter & Minimise

Create a feeling of space with minimal furniture and items out on display. Keep surfaces as clear as possible. Remove excess pieces of furniture and belongings you don’t need and consider carefully before introducing a chair. Chairs in bedrooms often end up becoming clotheshorses!

Symmetry

Bedside drawers, tables or nightstands with matching lamps or wall lights will give a high-end look.

Lighting

Keep lighting soft, low and warm-toned. Relaxing scented candles and fairy lights will create a lovely ambience.

Tech-free

Things to remove from the bedroom include mobile phones, TVs, laptops, exercise equipment and work-related stressors. Hide wires by attaching clips behind furniture.

Plants

Add air purifying houseplants to improve air quality while you sleep and provide instant greenery and freshness. Check out my blog post on the 10 best air-purifying plants for the bedroom. Even if you are not good with real plants, having some faux greenery in your bedroom will still have a beneficial effect on your mental health and wellbeing.

Bed

Invest in the best quality mattress and bedlinen you can afford. It’s worth it and you deserve it.

Headboard

A headboard will improve the look of your bed, offer practicality and create a focal point in the room.

Laundry

Have a designated spot or place to throw your dirty clothes to avoid ending up with an unsightly ‘floordrobe’. Laundry baskets made of natural materials are both practical and stylish and can look good sitting out in your bedroom. Alternatively, you can add a box or basket inside your wardrobe for dirty laundry. This helps to keep the bedroom tidy and the laundry out of sight.

It’s worth taking the time to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary – a peaceful, tranquil space you love spending time in.

Sweet dreams…
